Southeast Asia’s electricity demand is growing rapidly, driven by economic growth, industrial expansion, urbanisation, and new sources of demand such as data centres. At the same time, falling solar costs are making distributed renewable energy increasingly viable, but regulatory, financing, grid integration, and commercial barriers continue to limit deployment. This session brings together policymakers, industry players, investors, technology providers, and regional experts to discuss how distributed solar and battery energy storage can be scaled across Southeast Asia. The discussion will focus on practical lessons from the region, including what regulatory reforms can accelerate deployment, how smaller projects can become bankable, and what business models can make battery storage commercially viable. Session 1: Distributed Power Generation — Unlocking the Fastest Route to Clean Electricity in Southeast Asia. This panel explores the growth of rooftop, commercial and industrial, community-scale, mini-grid, and off-grid solar across the region. Speakers will share experience on regulation, permitting, interconnection, project development, and community participation, with a focus on identifying the reforms and approaches that can unlock faster deployment. Session 2: Storage as the Enabler — Battery Energy Storage, Grid Flexibility and Investable Business Models. This panel examines how battery energy storage can support greater renewable energy integration and provide flexibility to Southeast Asia’s power systems. The discussion will cover viable applications and revenue models, project bankability, financing structures, procurement and offtake, technical standards, and opportunities for regional battery manufacturing and supply chains.
