Gamifying Resilience: Play-Based Frameworks for Inclusive Climate Action

Climate action is often communicated through reports, technical frameworks and expert-led training. But communities facing water stress, heat, pollution, livelihood uncertainty and changing governance systems need more than information—they need the agency to understand systems, test choices and shape decisions. Gamifying Resilience is a 90-minute masterclass and manifesto-building session by SMART / Civic Games Lab exploring how games, simulations and participatory formats can become practical frameworks for climate action. The session will showcase field-tested approaches across climate awareness, rural development planning, integrated water management and city-building, demonstrating how complex challenges can be translated into playable systems using roles, cards, maps, budgets, scenarios and dilemmas. Participants will explore how play can enable communities to rehearse decisions, experience trade-offs, negotiate priorities and develop locally relevant pathways for resilience. The session will close with a collective Manifesto for Play-Based Climate Action—asking how play can move from novelty to a serious tool for inclusive climate planning and action.
