Many countries continue to face challenges including policy gaps, limited technical capacity, inadequate financing, and weak monitoring systems. Rising waste generation is also contributing to increasing methane emissions. As a potent greenhouse gas and major driver of near-term warming, methane in the waste sector mostly comes from municipal solid waste and wastewater. Therefore, reducing these emissions is increasingly recognized as a critical step to delivering near-term climate benefits while strengthening sustainable waste management systems. Essentially, addressing waste methane delivers benefits - including improved public health, resource efficiency, renewable energy generation, climate resilience, and local economic development.
