From risk to resilience: Urban Flood Prevention for Climate Action

Flooding is Thailand's most severe natural hazard. The country carries a near-maximum flood risk index of 9.8 out of 10, and Bangkok, home to more than 10 million people and around 48.7% of national GDP, ranks among the ten coastal cities worldwide most exposed to flood risk. Thailand's secondary cities are equally exposed with less capacity to respond, as the 2025 Hat Yai floods showed. Projections point to 2030–2034 as a particularly high-risk period. Mexico faces a strikingly similar challenge, and brings valuable experience in integrated flood risk management, national hydrological forecasting, urban resilience planning, disaster risk reduction and post-disaster recovery. This joint event by UN-Habitat and the Embassy of Mexico in Thailand convenes national and city authorities from both countries for a structured South-South exchange. A moderated panel will draw lessons from Hat Yai, Bangkok and Mexico City, examine national flood prevention policy and response, and explore nature-based solutions and green infrastructure for climate-resilient cities.
