Beyond the Megawatt: Demand Flexibility for a Clean, Smart and Resilient Grid in Emerging Asia

A sustainable energy transition is not only a question of building more renewable generation or modernising electricity grids. It also depends on how consumers use electricity, respond to prices and grid signals, and whether they are able and willing to participate in a more flexible energy system. Demand flexibility, the ability to shift or adjust electricity use in response to grid conditions or prices, can help integrate more renewables, reduce solar curtailment and maintain grid stability and reliability. Scaling it, would require enabling technologies, appropriate market incentives, supportive regulatory frameworks and consumer trust and participation. Drawing on experiences from India and Southeast Asia, this panel discussion will examine how market design, tariff structures, smart appliances, and different levels of demand-side response can unlock greater grid flexibility. It will explore how consumers can become active participants in the energy transition rather than simply end-users of electricity. The discussion will identify key enablers for scaling demand flexibility, facilitate regional learning and collaboration, and generate actionable policy recommendations and position demand flexibility as a critical enabler of Asia’s clean energy transition.
