Southeast Asia’s energy transition is entering a critical phase, driven by rising electricity demand, energy security concerns and the need for faster decarbonisation. Regional initiatives such as the ASEAN Power Grid, alongside the development of battery and critical mineral value chains, will be central to building a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future. As ASEAN develops more interconnected energy systems, cooperation with international partners will be important in turning regional ambitions into reality. Australia and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have emerged as significant contributors to Southeast Asia’s energy transition through investment, technology partnerships and policy cooperation. With Australia’s COP31 presidency providing an additional platform for regional climate diplomacy, Australia, the ROK and ASEAN have an opportunity to deepen cooperation on interconnected power systems, clean energy supply chains and energy security. By leveraging their complementary strengths, these partnerships can support regional priorities while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy future. At Bangkok Climate Action Week, ODI Global and Agora Energiewende will bring together regional experts from government, industry, research organisations and international institutions to explore practical pathways for strengthening cooperation on grid technologies, renewable energy integration, battery supply chains and critical minerals. Drawing on recent research by ODI Global and Agora Energiewende, the workshop will invite participants to test and build on emerging findings and consider a central question: how can cooperation between ASEAN, Australia and the ROK be strengthened to support a more connected, resilient and sustainable regional energy system?
