Seminar and Strategy Meeting on China for Renewable Energy Acceleration

The swift phase-out of fossil fuels must be accompanied by a swift phase-in of renewable energy systems, not only to replace fossil fuels but also to address energy poverty and achieve real energy security and sovereignty, a core component of sustainable and equitable economic development and prosperity. These twin tasks - phase out of fossils and phase in of renewables - come with many-sided challenges, including the need for finance and investments, standards and safeguards, democratic processes with the active participation of right-holders, and related fiscal and economic policy changes. China has a critical role to play in this transition. As the world’s largest manufacturer and installer of renewable energy technologies and a leading investor and developer of renewable energy projects, China has become a central partner for countries seeking to rapidly scale up solar, wind, storage and other clean-energy solutions. The 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) reinforces this role by prioritizing the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient new energy system, consolidating China’s technological and industrial advantages in renewable energy, and deepening international cooperation in renewable-energy projects, technology, industry, standards and certification. As Chinese companies expand overseas, this creates significant opportunities while also raising important questions around investment and financing models, technology transfer, local value creation, skills and supply-chain development, environmental and social safeguards, and regulatory and technical standards—making greater clarity and deeper understanding increasingly important among host-country stakeholders, policy-makers, and civil society. The two-day convening combines an interactive onsite learning session (1st day, Oct. 10 - by Registration) with a focused strategy workshop (2nd day, Oct 11 - by Invitation) to move from shared understanding to developing a collective position on China-Global South energy partnerships, and identifying concrete pathways for CSO engagement and action that can shape the next phase of the energy transition in the Global South, particularly in Asia.
