ACTIVATE Bangkok: Beyond the Station – Unlocking Sustainable Urban Mobility for a Compact, Connected, Climate-Resilient City

Bangkok is at a critical juncture in its urban development journey. As one of Southeast Asia’s largest and fastest-growing metropolitan areas, the city faces pressing challenges related to traffic congestion, urban sprawl, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and unequal access to safe and affordable mobility options. These challenges not only affect quality of life and economic productivity but also hinder the city’s efforts to achieve its climate commitments and long-term sustainability goals. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) offers a transformative approach to addressing these challenges by integrating land use, transport planning, and urban development. By promoting compact, connected, mixed-use, and walkable communities around high-capacity public transport corridors, TOD can reduce transport-related emissions, encourage active mobility, improve accessibility, and support more inclusive and resilient urban growth. The ACTIVATE Project, implemented under the Thailand–UK PACT programme, works in close collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and relevant national agencies to strengthen institutional capacity for climate-resilient and people-centred TOD. Through evidence-based planning tools, technical assistance, capacity building, and multi-stakeholder engagement, the project supports Bangkok in advancing sustainable urban mobility and accelerating the transition toward a low-carbon future. As part of Bangkok Climate Action Week, ACTIVATE Bangkok aims to create a platform for dialogue, learning, and public engagement on the future of sustainable urban mobility in Bangkok. Through a series of interactive exhibitions, panel discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions, the event will showcase how public transportation, active mobility, and people-centric urban design can contribute to climate action while creating healthier, more accessible, and more liveable communities. This event aims to bring policymakers, practitioners, transport operators, academia, civil society and citizens together over two days to explore how we can make transit safer, greener and easier to walk and cycling through, so that public transport becomes the natural choice for everyday journeys rather than a last resort. Over four sessions, this event will cover achievements and lessons from the ACTIVATE Bangkok project.
