At the same time, falling solar costs are making distributed renewable energy increasingly viable, but regulatory, financing, grid integration, and commercial barriers continue to limit deployment. This session brings together policymakers, industry players, investors, technology providers, and regional experts to discuss how distributed solar and battery energy storage can be scaled across Southeast Asia. The discussion will focus on practical lessons from the region, including what regulatory reforms can accelerate deployment, how smaller projects can become bankable, and what business models can make battery storage commercially viable. Session 1: Distributed Power Generation — Unlocking the Fastest Route to Clean Electricity in Southeast Asia. This panel explores the growth of rooftop, commercial and industrial, community-scale, mini-grid, and off-grid solar across the region. "What's On Our Plate?" A Conversation on Food, Climate, and What Makes Us Happy
What we eat matters—for our health, our happiness, and our planet. Climate experts tell us that shifting diets is one of the most powerful tools we have. Studies show that investing in plant-rich food systems delivers five times more climate impact per dollar than renewable energy. The ASEAN Carbon Neutrality Strategies for Agriculture charted pathways for climate-smart production—but what happens after the farm gate matters just as much. But here’s the thing: in ASEAN, where millions have only recently gained access to diverse, protein-rich diets after generations of food insecurity, the conversation about “diet shift” often feels disconnected from reality—imposed rather than invited. So instead of another expert lecture, we’re hosting a different kind of gathering. We’re bringing together food bloggers, home cooks, farmers, street food sellers, chefs, nutrition enthusiasts, and curious eaters to explore one simple question: Can food be delicious, make us happy, AND be good for the climate? This isn’t about guilt or giving up what we love. It’s about discovering what “responsible eating” actually looks like when it’s shaped by our own tastes, traditions, and realities—not by someone else’s playbook. The big questions: - What’s actually changing in the way ASEAN eats? More meat? More processed food? More diversity? What’s driving these shifts? - Is this good or bad for the environment—and for us? What does the evidence say, and what does it miss? - What would make us want to eat in ways that are better for the climate? What’s standing in the way? - Can “climate-friendly” food be tasty, affordable, and culturally meaningful—or is that a fantasy? The outcomes: - By the end of three hours, we want a clearer, collectively-built picture of: - What “responsible eating” means in the ASEAN context. "What's On Our Plate?" A Conversation on Food, Climate, and What Makes Us Happy
What we eat matters—for our health, our happiness, and our planet. Climate experts tell us that shifting diets is one of the most powerful tools we have. Studies show that investing in plant-rich food systems delivers five times more climate impact per dollar than renewable energy. The ASEAN Carbon Neutrality Strategies for Agriculture charted pathways for climate-smart production—but what happens after the farm gate matters just as much. But here’s the thing: in ASEAN, where millions have only recently gained access to diverse, protein-rich diets after generations of food insecurity, the conversation about “diet shift” often feels disconnected from reality—imposed rather than invited. So instead of another expert lecture, we’re hosting a different kind of gathering. We’re bringing together food bloggers, home cooks, farmers, street food sellers, chefs, nutrition enthusiasts, and curious eaters to explore one simple question: Can food be delicious, make us happy, AND be good for the climate? This isn’t about guilt or giving up what we love. It’s about discovering what “responsible eating” actually looks like when it’s shaped by our own tastes, traditions, and realities—not by someone else’s playbook. The big questions: - What’s actually changing in the way ASEAN eats? More meat? More processed food? More diversity? What’s driving these shifts? - Is this good or bad for the environment—and for us? What does the evidence say, and what does it miss? - What would make us want to eat in ways that are better for the climate? What’s standing in the way? - Can “climate-friendly” food be tasty, affordable, and culturally meaningful—or is that a fantasy? As one of Southeast Asia’s largest and fastest-growing metropolitan areas, the city faces pressing challenges related to traffic congestion, urban sprawl, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and unequal access to safe and affordable mobility options. These challenges not only affect quality of life and economic productivity but also hinder the city’s efforts to achieve its climate commitments and long-term sustainability goals. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) offers a transformative approach to addressing these challenges by integrating land use, transport planning, and urban development. By promoting compact, connected, mixed-use, and walkable communities around high-capacity public transport corridors, TOD can reduce transport-related emissions, encourage active mobility, improve accessibility, and support more inclusive and resilient urban growth. The ACTIVATE Project, implemented under the Thailand–UK PACT programme, works in close collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and relevant national agencies to strengthen institutional capacity for climate-resilient and people-centred TOD. Through evidence-based planning tools, technical assistance, capacity building, and multi-stakeholder engagement, the project supports Bangkok in advancing sustainable urban mobility and accelerating the transition toward a low-carbon future. As part of Bangkok Climate Action Week, ACTIVATE Bangkok aims to create a platform for dialogue, learning, and public engagement on the future of sustainable urban mobility in Bangkok. In Barangay Bicos, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, local leadership and community action demonstrate how communities can take steps toward more affordable and accessible renewable energy, while also confronting the financial and institutional challenges that come with making the transition. In Shanxi, communities are navigating the complex transition beyond coal, revealing both the challenges and opportunities of building new livelihoods and a more sustainable future. Through the Future Renewable Energy Engineer (FREE) Scholarship Program, young Filipinos are preparing to become the next generation of renewable energy leaders, showing that investing in people is essential to sustaining the transition for decades to come. This hands-on workshop invites everyone to explore how technology, traditional farming knowledge, and creativity can come together to shape the future of food in a changing climate. Through a learning journey, participants move from the field to the digital world and back again: learning alongside experienced farmers, building an open-source FarmBot, coding automated planting and watering systems, experimenting with AI-powered plant identification, and finally harvesting and sharing what they have grown. Presented as a live, participatory experience at Bangkok Climate Action Week, the workshop inspires people how we can transform from technology end-users into makers and problem-solvers. By connecting digital skills with food, farming, and real-world climate challenges, it demonstrates how accessible technology can become a tool for climate action, community resilience, and a new generation of agricultural innovation.
