Heat, Work and the New Economy: Protecting Informal Workers in a Warming Southeast Asia
Extreme heat is rapidly becoming a labour, livelihood and economic resilience challenge across Southeast Asia. Informal and outdoor workers - including street vendors, construction workers, transport workers, waste workers, small farmers and migrant workers who are often among the most exposed, yet remain least protected by workplace safeguards, social protection, insurance and adaptation finance. This interactive policy and practice lab asks: what would a worker-centred heat protection system for Southeast Asia look like? Bringing together workers and community-facing organisations, cities, researchers, public-health practitioners, funders, insurers and development partners, the session will explore how heat early warning can be connected to decisions, practical protection and financial mechanisms before harm occurs. Participants will use a Sense–Decide–Act–Sustain framework to examine early warning and risk intelligence; institutional protocols and responsibilities; measures such as shade, hydration, cooling spaces, work-rest cycles and community preparedness; and the role of anticipatory finance, social protection, micro-insurance and parametric insurance. The session aims to generate practical principles and partnerships for protecting workers while strengthening the resilience of cities and local economies across Southeast Asia.

The swift phase-out of fossil fuels must be accompanied by a swift phase-in of renewable energy systems, not only to replace fossil fuels but also to address energy poverty and achieve real energy security and sovereignty, a core component of sustainable and equitable economic development and prosperity. These twin tasks - phase out of fossils and phase in of renewables - come with many-sided challenges, including the need for finance and investments, standards and safeguards, democratic processes with the active participation of right-holders, and related fiscal and economic policy changes. China has a critical role to play in this transition. As the world’s largest manufacturer and installer of renewable energy technologies and a leading investor and developer of renewable energy projects, China has become a central partner for countries seeking to rapidly scale up solar, wind, storage and other clean-energy solutions. The 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) reinforces this role by prioritizing the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient new energy system, consolidating China’s technological and industrial advantages in renewable energy, and deepening international cooperation in renewable-energy projects, technology, industry, standards and certification. As Chinese companies expand overseas, this creates significant opportunities while also raising important questions around investment and financing models, technology transfer, local value creation, skills and supply-chain development, environmental and social safeguards, and regulatory and technical standards—making greater clarity and deeper understanding increasingly important among host-country stakeholders, policy-makers, and civil society. The two-day convening combines an interactive onsite learning session (1st day, Oct. 10 - by Registration) with a focused strategy workshop (2nd day, Oct 11 - by Invitation) to move from shared understanding to developing a collective position on China-Global South energy partnerships, and identifying concrete pathways for CSO engagement and action that can shape the next phase of the energy transition in the Global South, particularly in Asia.

Surviving the City: How Residents Adapt to Heat, Floods, and a Sinking Ground
Bangkok faces an accelerating convergence of climate risks that are already reshaping daily life for its residents. Urban heat effects intensify temperatures beyond regional averages, recurrent flooding disrupts livelihoods across low-lying districts, and land subsidence compounds the city’s long-term vulnerability. These risks fall most heavily on those least equipped to respond — elderly residents, outdoor workers, children, and communities in under-served or flood-prone neighbourhoods. The World Bank projects Thailand’s GDP could fall by 7–14% by 2050 without timely, sufficient adaptation investment. Public understanding of the risks, choices, and trade-offs involved remains limited, and there are few structured channels through which residents, researchers, funders, and policymakers can exchange lessons with peer cities facing the same pressures. The inter-city panel is convened to help close that gap. With more than 20 years of experience in dance, movement, and arts-based education, Kru Som has developed a learning approach that brings together Movement, Music, Play, Storytelling, and Multisensory Learning. She sees ‘art’ as a ‘language’ that creates space for children to express themselves, experiment, ask questions, and discover through their own experiences. At the same time, adults are encouraged to learn how to observe, listen, and support children rather than simply providing the answers. Art Around Us consists of three interconnected learning experiences: Planting Creativity, a workshop for parents and caregivers; Growing Together, a workshop for children and families; and Bloom: Creative Creatures, an art workshop for children. The three experiences were developed collaboratively with creative practitioners from diverse disciplines, including Dance for All Thailand, Khing Kaan Bai, Music Garden Studio, and other participating artists and creators. Together, they bring learning experiences to life through art, movement, music, play, storytelling, as well as everyday objects, reusable and recycled materials. Through these processes, Art Around Us explores how art can foster meaningful connections between children and adults, while transforming the things around us into spaces for creativity, discovery, and shared learning. This workshop is more than simply an “activity to do with your child.” It offers parents and caregivers practical tools for recognising when to invite, when to help, when to wait, and when to step back, allowing children to take the lead in their own discoveries. With more than 20 years of experience in dance, movement, and arts-based education, Kru Som has developed a learning approach that brings together Movement, Music, Play, Storytelling, and Multisensory Learning. She sees ‘art’ as a ‘language’ that creates space for children to express themselves, experiment, ask questions, and discover through their own experiences. At the same time, adults are encouraged to learn how to observe, listen, and support children rather than simply providing the answers. Art Around Us consists of three interconnected learning experiences: Planting Creativity, a workshop for parents and caregivers; Growing Together, a workshop for children and families; and Bloom: Creative Creatures, an art workshop for children. The three experiences were developed collaboratively with creative practitioners from diverse disciplines, including Dance for All Thailand, Khing Kaan Bai, Music Garden Studio, and other participating artists and creators. Together, they bring learning experiences to life through art, movement, music, play, storytelling, as well as everyday objects, reusable and recycled materials. Through these processes, Art Around Us explores how art can foster meaningful connections between children and adults, while transforming the things around us into spaces for creativity, discovery, and shared learning. Participants will engage through play, movement, sound, music, songs, natural materials, everyday objects, and reused materials, discovering how simple things can stimulate children’s senses, imagination, thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. They will also experience for themselves what it feels like to have no single “right answer”—to make choices, explore, change their minds, and try again. This workshop is more than simply an “activity to do with your child.” It offers parents and caregivers practical tools for recognising when to invite, when to help, when to wait, and when to step back, allowing children to take the lead in their own discoveries. Forest Voices, City Futures
Changes in forests may seem distant from urban life. Yet headwater forests are closely connected to water systems, ecosystems, and people’s quality of life. What happens to our forests can therefore have a greater impact on our cities than we might realise. This learning space invites participants to explore the connection between headwater forests and urban life, drawing on the real-world experience of the Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation. It aims to bring conservation closer to everyday life and deepen understanding of how forests are connected to water security, the environment, and our daily lives. Designed as an interactive learning experience, the programme combines storytelling, board games, and creative workshops. It creates a space for young people and other participants to exchange perspectives, learn together, and turn their understanding into ideas and actions that can begin with themselves, their schools, communities, or cities. By recognising that forests and cities are not separate from one another, we can better understand our own role and begin contributing to environmental change from where we are.

Long Table Dining Experience "Jamuan Puan Rimba": A Cuisine Shaped by the Forest
Jamuan Puan Rimba is a curated long table luncheon showcasing cuisine inspired by Indonesia’s forest landscapes. The luncheon will feature food and ingredients from South Sumatra, North Kalimantan, and West Nusa Tenggara. The courses will retain some original Indonesian dishes and preparations. In other courses, Chef Bo Songvisava of Bo.lan will combine Indonesian forest ingredients with local Thai ingredients and culinary techniques to create new Thai Indonesian dishes. This dining experience uses food as an entry point for understanding forests, community knowledge, local economies, and climate action. Through storytelling and shared dining, participants will experience how women’s leadership is connected to food systems, non-timber forest products, sustainable livelihoods, and forest governance. This approach has also offered communities a new economic model through eco-gastronomy tourism. By connecting forest stewardship, local food, and storytelling, communities can create visitor experiences that generate local income, strengthen women’s enterprises, and encourage the continued protection of forests and local knowledge in their respective villages.
