Nature-based and bioeconomy approaches are emerging across different regions of the Global South, shaped by local ecosystems, communities, markets, policies, and development priorities. While the contexts differ, many actors face similar questions around how to create economic value from natural resources while maintaining ecological integrity and ensuring benefits reach communities. Indonesia's emerging bioeconomy agenda provides one perspective within this broader conversation, linking natural resources, innovation, value chains, livelihoods, and economic development. Experiences from other countries can offer complementary lessons on how these approaches are being developed, governed, financed, and connected to markets. This session creates a space for practitioners, policymakers, businesses, community leaders, investors, and ecosystem actors from Indonesia and other Global South regions to exchange practical experiences, including lessons from approaches that have worked, challenges encountered along the way, and opportunities for collaboration.

Building People-Centered Mobility: Where Does the Shift Need to Happen in South and Southeast Asia?
Recent global disruptions, from the COVID-19 pandemic to fuel price shocks, have exposed the vulnerability of transport systems that remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels especially across South and Southeast Asia. Rising fuel and transport costs can quickly translate into higher household expenses and delivery costs, while making access to jobs, markets, goods, and essential services more difficult, particularly for those with the least capacity to absorb these shocks. As these disruptions and uncertainties continue, building transport systems that are more resilient and less vulnerable to external shocks is increasingly urgent. In 2023, the United Nations declared the Decade of Sustainable Transport, beginning in 2026. As momentum builds around solutions towards cleaner transport, the transition also presents an opportunity to rethink how transport systems can become more accessible, affordable, and resilient, while responding to local realities. The question is: where does the greatest potential for shift lie, and what will it take to move from momentum to meaningful transformation? Across South and Southeast Asia, cities, communities, and civil society are already advancing diverse approaches from improving and electrifying public transport to investing in walking, cycling, and stronger first- and last-mile connections. Grassroots and non-state actors are also pushing change by generating evidence, testing solutions, and bringing community realities into transport decision-making. Organized by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) under the Clean Mobility Collective (CMC), this session will bring together CMC members and other non-state actors to examine the realities of mobility on the ground; what is happening in cities and communities, who is being left behind, and where implementation continues to fall short. This session will be a candid fireside chat to unpack the practical challenges of policy, investment, and movement-building, including what is working, what isn’t, where the key gaps lie, and how civil society, non-state actors, and funders can help advance inclusive, scalable, and locally grounded solutions.

Climate Friendly Rice in SEA-China: Practices, Challenges and Possibilities
Community-based solutions from NGOs and farmers Rice exhibition Panel discussion from practitioners and researchers The frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events have risen sharply over the past half-century, and the risks to agri-food systems and ecosystems are set to soar in the future, according to the latest joint report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Rice, the world’s most in-demand staple crop, is not only vulnerable to climate change but also exacerbates it, as traditional cultivation methods generate substantial quantities of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Additionally, its highly water-intensive nature poses a formidable challenge to an increasingly arid planet. Currently, climate-friendly rice farming is shifting from a single technology focused on reducing methane emissions from paddy fields to a comprehensive approach that balances emissions reduction, adaptation, food security. Although international agricultural climate policies emphasize, at the value level, the importance of farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and the role of vulnerable groups and smallholder farmers in climate adaptation, key challenges in implementation remain: whether smallholder farmers can truly participate, how to mitigate the risks associated with technology transition, and how to provide incentives for them to benefit. This also creates opportunities for NGOs, community networks, and local knowledge producers to play a meaningful role. In China, many NGOs have taken climate-friendly rice as a starting point, integrating traditional agricultural wisdom with modern scientific and technological advancements to explore technical systems and practical guidelines tailored to diverse production entities, ranging from large-scale commercial farms to family farms and smallholder households. By conducting pilot demonstrations across multiple provinces and providing training on concepts and techniques, these organizations are actively promoting the localized implementation and nationwide adoption of climate-friendly rice farming technologies. China and the rice-growing regions of SEA share similar climate challenges, such as high temperatures, droughts, floods, and water resource stress, while differing in policy, market mechanisms, and governance. Their respective localized practices can provide a case-based foundation for inter-regional exchange and knowledge sharing, while also seeking an opportunity to develop SEA-China climate-friendly rice network.

The session will present findings and recommendations from the FFA network’s research, with particular attention to trade governance, benefit sharing and local value addition, and the distance between sustainability narratives and the substantive content of emerging trade agreements, Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and the financing behind them. Emerging economies face a pressing dual challenge: accelerating the transition to low-carbon energy systems while unlocking the up-front investment to achieve it. With early-stage energy transition financing needs far outstripping available public resources, scaling up private capital mobilization has become indispensable. Energy transition country platforms — including Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs), other country-led investment platforms, and blended finance facilities — have emerged as a promising mechanism for aligning public policy, concessional finance, and private capital around national transition priorities. JETPs in South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Senegal have secured approximately USD 46.5 billion in commitments, demonstrating the potential of coordinated platforms to aggregate finance and policy support behind country-led plans. However, experience to date also highlights significant implementation challenges: slow disbursement, project preparation bottlenecks, limited private capital mobilization, and the need to ensure a just transition that creates jobs and supports affected communities. The central question is no longer whether the transition is achievable. It is how to convert initial commitments into investable projects that mobilize private finance at scale, and deliver a transition that is economically inclusive, socially just, and aligned with national development priorities. Electricity demand is rising rapidly across the subregion, driven by industrialization, urbanization and a growing middle class. Coal and gas continue to supply a substantial share of the regional energy mix all the while countries face constrained fiscal space, supply chain vulnerabilities, rising debt-servicing burdens, and intensifying climate impacts. A decade into its low-carbon commitments, Southeast Asia is encountering the limits of fossil-fuel dependency which requires a candid assessment of whether current energy transition strategies pathways are adequate to deliver the aspirations of countries in this subregion. This event will invite participants to examine the energy transition through the lens of green growth, treating it as an economic and social proposition rather than solely as a response to climate change. It will consider the conditions under which economic growth, expanded energy access, decarbonization, and employment can be pursued together, and the trade-offs, sequencing decisions and distributional questions that can deliver that vision while leaving no one behind. The discussion will give particular attention to regionally relevant trends: transport and mobility, the social and human capital dimensions of the transition, and the financing architecture that will determine which pathways are feasible. Diverse policy and financial tools are being deployed to drive a just transition. Drawing from the diverse experiences of Member States, civil society, private sector, academia, international financial institutions, and the range of stakeholders present at Bangkok Climate Action Week and the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meeting, this event aims to: • Articulate the benefits of energy transition as a driver of green growth and energy security while also identifying inclusion risks; • Share high-impact, regional examples of energy transition policies that can help overcome renewable energy deployment and sustainability; • Identify practical policy, institutional and sequencing choices for low-carbon mobility that improve access, including electrified mass transit, EVs, and two- and three-wheeler markets; • Examine how worker protection, skills development and the participation of informal workers, rural communities, women and youth can be embedded in energy transition planning; • Share policy and investment strategies for increasing industrial competitiveness through the energy transition; • Identification of financing tools, project preparation and risk-sharing needed to lower capital costs and expand investable pipelines. ETGGP is an ESCAP initiative to support Southeast Asian member States to plan, coordinate, and accelerate energy transitions. Access to affordable, reliable and clean energy is fundamental to sustainable development. How countries manage transitions in their energy systems will shape prospects for economic growth, energy security, and social development for decades to come.

This workshop moves beyond just discussing climate data or processing feelings. It approaches eco-anxiety through self-awareness, body regulation, and structured peer connection-equipping you with practical tools to shift from panic to purpose. Partnering with Scripps College and the 30x30 Thailand Coalition for academic expertise, the cruise invites participants to explore, observe, and document local biodiversity, including native bird and plant species, establishing a crucial ecological database for future conservation. Beyond environmental protection, the project leverages a Citizen Science approach to empower youth and attendees as Active Environmental Citizens who can act as local explorers, eco-communicators, and community change-makers. Managed directly by the local community enterprise, the initiative boosts the grassroots economy by generating sustainable income for neighborhood vendors. Changing Climate, Changing Lives (CCCL) Film Festival, under Tonkla Rak Lok Foundation, together with HERA, Hai-Jai, mlkywy.hub, Snappy Duck, and noble PLAY, presents “CCCL Film Festival at BKKCAW 2026,” a two-day program exploring the relationships between living beings, biodiversity, and the environments we share. taking place on 3–4 October 2026 at noble PLAY (Ploenchit BTS Station), the program consists of a curated selection of short films, photography and art exhibitions, and a conversation for filmmakers and environmental and social storytellers as part of Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026. The film program brings together a selection of outstanding Thai and international short films previously screened at CCCL Film Festival. From threatened wetlands to communities working together to protect their local ecosystems, the films invite audiences to consider the connections between living beings, biodiversity, and the changing climate, and how changes within one part of an ecosystem can affect everything around it. The program will also feature a screening of YANUNI on 4 October at 3:00 PM, directed by Richard Ladkani and co-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The documentary follows an Indigenous woman leader as she fights to protect her ancestral lands in the Amazon rainforest. Variety described the film as an environmental documentary that is “thrilling and romantic.” Alongside the film program, HERA will present a collection of 12 photographs documenting the impacts of rising urban temperatures on women, including how extreme heat affects their work and health. We're excited to announce our long-awaited Deep Time Walk in Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026! A transformative journey to experience the deep longing in our bodies. . This time, we are joined by Di Kilsby, a fellow Deep Time Walk facilitator from Australia/Cambodia. Di will invite us to reflect on Deep Time through Indigenous Australian and feminist perspectives, brought to life through art and storytelling. As a result, this session will be conducted primarily in English. We’d love to invite you all to come walk with us! 🙂 . We warmly invite friends to come and learn, reflect, and reconnect with the Earth through the vast and deep dimension of time. . Join us on a 4.6-kilometer walk that embodies the 4.6 billion-year history of the Earth, where each meter walked represents one million years of our planetary body history. We allow ourselves to follow the invitation to see the world anew through a perspective of deep interconnection with all life. . Through experiential activities and a conceptual design showcase, visitors are invited to consider how extreme heat can deepen existing inequalities and how public spaces can better respond to diverse users. Zone 1 – Experience Unequal Impacts Visitors take part in guided and hands-on activities exploring mobility, sensory and communication barriers experienced by people with disabilities, and how extreme heat can intensify these everyday challenges. Zone 2 – Cooling Shelter Model Visitors explore a conceptual Cooling Shelter through a physical scale model and supporting visuals, demonstrating how accessible design and passive cooling strategies can be integrated into public spaces to provide relief from urban heat.
